Most singles want to get married and have children. We want that white-picket fence dream, surrounded by a loving spouse, happy children, and even the playful family dog. The older we get, the more friends we watch get married and have babies—and the more alone we begin to feel. That dream begins to become allusive, and we begin to feel like an island unto ourselves. We have no family of our own. And we are lonely.

Every single person has a mental image of “the one” he or she is waiting for. We have created a picture of their appearance, personality, career, beliefs, and even behavior, some more detailed than others. While all of our preferences and definitions of “the one” differ superficially, I believe that at the core of our hearts we all define “the one” as the following:
The one I’ll spend my life with.

As a single adult, I sometimes feel that my answer to every question others ask about my personal life is the same—I’m waiting. Waiting to find the right person, waiting to start a family, the list could go on and on. But as I’ve grown older, I have realized that many of us singles, especially Christian singles, wait for things we need not to, living half lives in the name of waiting.
