It’s Veterans’ Day. Veterans will eat free all over town, hear “thank you for your service” from strangers, and get special discounts at the mall, Home Depot, and Lowe’s. Those who have served in the US military will appreciate these gestures and will kindly respond to the sentiments expressed. It will be a day of good feelings all around.
Mind you, this hoopla will be uncomfortable for those who served during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. For them, cold indifference is a welcome contrast to what they experienced on their homecoming or …

When people ask for my thoughts on something, they generally get “same day service” and more words than they want or bargained for—no one ever accused me of being brief. It has been over a week since Patricia Krecklow sweetly asked me to write something for the church blog, saying “whatever is on your mind.” What was on my mind had to pass through feelings before it could be expressed in words. It means I can unhesitatingly say, “My country is worth it.” The American people, flawed sinners joined together not by ethnicity or color, but by common hopes and dreams, are worth it. The land that encompasses America is worth it. The promises implicit in the American way of life is worth it. The freedom we enjoy to think, speak, love, and work is worth it.
