spencersMy husband of 30 years was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s about three years ago. We married when our children were grown, so we have had a lot of honeymoon years—just Lew and me. He is 87 now, and I guess I never expected him to get old, much less expected to face Alzheimer’s with him.

It has been over a week since Patricia Krecklow sweetly asked me to write something for the church blog, saying “whatever is on your mind.” What was on my mind had to pass through feelings before it could be expressed in words. The older we get, the more friends we watch get married and have babies—and the more alone we begin to feel. That dream begins to become allusive, and we begin to feel like an island unto ourselves. We have no family of our own. And we are lonely.
