My husband of 30 years was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s about three years ago. We married when our children were grown, so we have had a lot of honeymoon years—just Lew and me. He is 87 now, and I guess I never expected him to get old, much less expected to face Alzheimer’s with him.

When people ask for my thoughts on something, they generally get “same day service” and more words than they want or bargained for—no one ever accused me of being brief. It has been over a week since Patricia Krecklow sweetly asked me to write something for the church blog, saying “whatever is on your mind.” What was on my mind had to pass through feelings before it could be expressed in words. Most singles want to get married and have children. We want that white-picket fence dream, surrounded by a loving spouse, happy children, and even the playful family dog. The older we get, the more friends we watch get married and have babies—and the more alone we begin to feel. That dream begins to become allusive, and we begin to feel like an island unto ourselves. We have no family of our own. And we are lonely.
